Kansas City officer dies after being shot in police car

During a press conference at 4 pm local time, police confirmed Captain Robert Melton died from his injuries at a Kansas City hospital. Start prayers, unknown condition.

University of Kansas trauma surgeon James Howard said the officer, Capt. Robert Melton, arrived just before 2:30 p.m. and that resuscitation efforts did not work.

An officer took one of the suspects into custody, police said. The caller advised he was being shot at by several parties in a vehicle, KCK police said in a statement.

A Kansas City police captain has been shot and killed.

Melton’s age and how long he had served with the department have not been released.

An officer has been shot at 22nd and Haskell in Kansas City, Kan. and by 2:45 p.m. one person was in custody and police had detained another person.

A total of 31 law enforcement officers have been shot to death while on duty this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Authorities said he was wearing a bullet-resistant vest.

“We ask everyone to be just prayerful”, Holland said.

“We just want to encourage everyone not to jump to conclusions about what has happened today, ” Holland said.

A day after he spent almost six hours investigating the last known address of Baton Rouge shooter Gavin Long, Kansas City police officer Shawn Hamre was playing catch in the parking lot with other officers.

The officer, who was by himself, has life-threatening wounds.

Gavin Eugene reportedly carried out the attack on his 29th birthday and was shot dead at the scene.

Police say one suspect is in custody, and they are now searching for another suspect.
