Asserting that booking Baloch leaders-in-exile for allegedly backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi ” s remarks only showed the sheer bankruptcy of Pakistan, the Congress on August 22 stated that Islamabad’s continuous suppression of its own people only exposed the political and constitutional bankruptcy of the “failed state’. Balochistan has been reduced to a geostrategic loci, central to Pakistan’s self-aggrandizement as an opulent crossroads for global powers. He invited Sartaj Aziz to attend it and welcomed the proposal by Pakistan to host the OIC Summit. Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan, two of the three regions in Pakistan mentioned by Modi in his address, are critical nodes along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a series of energy and infrastructure projects anchored by a road network that will connect China’s western Xinjiang region to the Arabian Sea port of Gwadar, located in Pakistani Balochistan along Persian Gulf shipping lanes and in the Indian Ocean region. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has commended the beginning of “a new freedom movement in Kashmir” and has accused India of using unrestrained force to quell widespread anger against Delhi. Its latest missive takes back the bilateral conversation on Kashmir by nearly two decades. “India is non-serious in finding a solution to the Kashmir dispute. India-Pakistan, Pakistan-Afghanistan, Durand Line, everything is a legacy of the British”, said Karzai, who has warm ties with New Delhi despite having left office. This perceived deliberate isolation of Pakistan is also bolstering the BJP’s popularity back home.

While many Baloch nationalist leaders have hailed the Indian PM’s statements, it is more a case of clutching at straws at a time when the world continues to turn a blind eye to the crisis in Balochistan. Large number of lawyers, journalists, civil society and school students are participating in the rallies. Should Pakistan provide India with such an opportunity, is indeed, somewhat astonishing.
