Kashmir issue to dominate Nawaz Sharif’s UNGA address

Officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), probing Sunday’s terror attack on the Army camp in Uri which left 18 soldiers dead, believe that the terrorists spent at least a day in the mountains above the brigade headquarters complex, observing their target.

Launching their attack from the western side of the complex, the four-man assault team first shot a sentry, before three headed towards tents where the soldiers were billeted, and the two buildings. “One soldier was killed and the operation is going on”, he said. They also have two Global Positioning System devices, one of which was damaged while another one was given to National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) engineers.

Gun-battles with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri and Nowgam, 100 km apart, on for 20 hours now, are in the final stages, say sources after the Army thwarted two major infiltration attempts on Tuesday. He said Pakistan’s support for Kashmiri people “in their legitimate struggle for self determination and its commitment to the Kashmir cause are non-negotiable”. Sharif raised the issue of alleged human rights violations and killings in Kashmir and sought American help to resolve the Kashmir issue. He apprised John Kerry about Pakistan’s efforts in curbing terrorism and said Operation Zarb-e-Azb has broken the back of terrorists.

Sharif, who is in NY to attend the 71th Session of United Nations General Assembly, earlier called on the permanent members of the UN Security Council demanding that India should be forced to stop its alleged brutalities in Kashmir.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has backed Pakistan and called on India to immediately cease “atrocities” in Kashmir and peacefully settle the issue in accordance with wishes of Kashmiri people and the UNSC resolutions.

The Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also offered condolences to the Turkish President on the recent terrorist incidents in various cities across Turkey that had led to the loss of precious human lives.

“He will respond militarily”, said Deepak Sinha, a retired 30-year veteran of the army who helped train India’s Special Forces.

Pakistan has said it “categorically rejects” any involvement in the raid, calling Indian statements of its complicity “vitriolic and unsubstantiated”.
