Kashmir’s longest curfew lifted after 51 days, restrictions to continue

The official said that on Monday morning, public transport continued to be off the roads, but the movement of private cars and auto-rickshaws on the roads in Srinagar started.

So far 68 civilians and two Indian policemen were killed, and thousands of others including government forces personnel were injured in the ongoing unrest.

Businesses have also taken a direct hit, suffering losses of over Rs 7,500 crore.

A complete shutdown was observed in Rajouri, Poonch and adjoining areas against the civilian killings in Kashmir and to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir, where 86 people have been killed in forces’ action during the past 51 days. “Five other protesters also received bullet injuries”, the officer, who is not authorised to speak to the media, told this news agency.

All senior separatist leaders are under detention in Srinagar.

Curfew was clamped in entire Valley on July 9 following violence in the aftermath of Wani’s killing in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district a day earlier.

Over a thousand people in Kashmir have suffered injuries because of pellet guns, with most being eye injuries, further fuelling the anger against the Indian forces and the government. At least 12 people were injured in Monday’s wave of violence, police and hospital officials said. “Go-India-Go” protests continued till last reports came in. During the day, groups of miscreants pelted stones on security forces at Chattabal, Kani Kadal, Khanyar and Batamaloo areas of Srinagar, the police official said.

As the state government was gearing up to receive an all- party delegation on Sunday, separatists today extended their strike call till September 8 and directed the people to occupy roads connecting the Srinagarairport with the city.

“Curfew has been lifted from the entire Valley”.

“Except for these incidents, overall situation remained peaceful and under control throughout the Kashmir valley till filling of this report”.

Kashmir is at the centre of a decades-old rivalry between India and Pakistan, with both countries staking a claim over the territory. A total of 71 people have been killed and over 11,000 others injured in the Valley during this period.

Following the call given by the separatist leaderships, scores of women took out a pro-freedom march in Botingoo area of Sopore in north Kashmir.
