Kashmir shut for 78th day

In occupied Kashmir, Hurriyet leaders Shabbir Ahmad Dar, Muhammad Iqbal Mir, Imtiyaz Ahmad Reshi, Ghulam Nabi War and Muhammad Ahsan Untoo have strongly denounced killing of 22 years old Waseem Ahmad Lone of Nadihal by Indian Army when he was harvesting crops in his field. The tension increased as another young boy was killed in clashes by the security forces last night in Rafiaabad area of Baramullah.

“The bullet had damaged his heart and caused instant death”, said Dr Masood of District Hospital Baramulla in north Kashmir.

The police official said law enforcement agencies were trying to restore order in the area. Following the death, fresh protests broke out in Nadihal and adjoining areas, the police official said.

The death toll in the unrest that began with the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani on 8 July has now risen to 83.

Curfew was imposed in five police station areas of downtown Srinagar and Batamaloo and Maisuma areas in the uptown city, the official said.

Kashmir remained shut for the 78th consecutive day on Saturday as authorities deployed security forces in Srinagar city and some other places to maintain law and order.

“The curfew has been imposed in view of apprehensions of law-and-order problems”, a police officer said.

Meanwhile, the unrest has badly affected the tourism sector in the Valley.

Kashmir separatists have been releasing weekly protest agendas; following Friday’s clashes, they called for marches to various tehsil headquarters across the Valley.

The separatist leadership extended its protest programme till September 29, but relaxed the strike on some days, unlike the previous week.

Educational institutions, main markets and other businesses have also remained shut. Mobile internet services also remained suspended, while the outgoing calls on prepaid numbers continued to remain barred across the Valley.
