Kashmir Valley shivers, Leh freezes at minus 12 degrees

Jammu: The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was restored for vehicular traffic on Saturday with restrictions after remaining closed due to obstructions at multiple places caused by snowfall and intermittent rains in the state on Friday.

In the Jammu region, the minimum temperatures on Thursday was 13.0 degrees Celsius in Jammu, 11.6 in Katra, 3.2 in Banihal, 5.5 in Batote and 4.1 in Bhaderwah.

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was thrown open for two-way traffic on Saturday, even as some areas in the higher reaches of the Valley received snow for the third consecutive day with the mercury plunging to 10 degrees below the freezing point in the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg.

“We have sufficient stocks of essentials while the men and machinery is ready to deal with snowfall”, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Asgar Samoon said. The city recorded a low of minus 0.8 degrees as against 0.6 degrees the previous night.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of 2.8 degrees Celsius, an increase of one degree from 1.

He said this was the coldest night of the season in the town this winter.

The nearby Kargil town experienced a drop on two degrees in the night temperature as it recorded a low of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius compared to minus 3.6 degrees Celsius the previous night, the official said.

In the plains of Punjab, Sikh holy city Amritsar recorded a minimum temperature of 4.4 degrees, making it the coldest place in the state.

Meanwhile, a Meteorological department official told Rising Kashmir that weather would remain dry up to December 16.
