The feeling in the room was electric all night as hundreds of supporters roared in approval as Donald Trump won the New Hampshire Republican primary in a landslide. Ted Cruz in last week’s Iowa caucuses, the first nominating contest.
Mr Sanders’ win in New Hampshire came as little surprise after he enjoyed double-digit leads in statewide opinion polls for months.
More than 4 in 10 of those who voted in the Republican primary identified as independents, and they largely backed Trump.
Republican presidential candidate, businessman Donald Trump waves has he arrives for a campaign rally Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, in Manchester, N.H. Marco Rubio and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush all locked in a tight race, along with Cruz.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who had dedicated a significant amount of time to New Hampshire, lagged behind early in the vote count.
Rubio had appeared to be breaking away after a stronger-than-expected third-place showing in Iowa, but he stumbled in Saturday’s Republican debate under intense pressure from Christie. While New Hampshire has fewer evangelical voters than Iowa, the Texas senator is looking for a strong showing in the Granite State.
In a sign of Trump’s impact on the race, two-thirds of GOP voters said they supported a temporary ban on non-citizen Muslims entering the USA, a position the billionaire outlined a year ago amid rising fears of terrorism emanating from the Middle East.
Almost half of voters in the Republican primary made up their minds in the past week.
Did debates matter? According to a CBS exit poll, 53 percent of the Democrats said the last debate influenced their votes, compared to 65 percent of GOP voters who said the most recent debate was a factor.
Only hours before the primary, new clouds gathered around the Clinton campaign following a Politico report that the candidate and her husband were disappointed with the direction of her campaign and that a staff shakeup could be in the offing. He has appealed to liberal Democrats who believe Obama hasn’t done enough to address the nation’s disparity in wealth.
“What the people here have said is given the enormous crises facing our country, it is just too late for the same old, same old establishment politics, and establishment economics”, Sanders told a victory rally.
Hillary Clinton echoed Sanders’ calls for taking on Wall Street banks and tackling income inequality, but cast herself as more prepared to make good on her policy pledges.
He also did very well among voters who are dissatisfied or angry with the federal government (32 percent of their votes) and those who feel betrayed by the Republican Party (32 percent).
But Sanders’ convincing victory means she must push hard in South Carolina, Nevada and Super Tuesday states. “Thank you all so much”. Thx to our incredible NH supporters! Clinton congratulated Senator Bernie Sanders on his victory in her concession speech in Hooksett and vowed to battle on, saying she knows how to get results voters are demanding.
