Kasich signs bill diverting Planned Parenthood funding

Planned Parenthood is criticizing Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s (KAY’-sihks) decision to sign a bill into law cutting off state funding for the agency.

The group says programs targeted in the bill helped Planned Parenthood in the past year to provide more than 47,000 STD tests and 3,600 HIV tests to Ohioans, serve almost 2,800 new or expectant mothers, and inform young people and women about healthy relationships.

Federal and state laws already prohibit taxpayer dollars from going to fund abortions, with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Kasich will sign the bill one day after South Carolina’s primary.

“As noted by Newsbusters, even the Washington Post agrees that the claim is not true: “…the myth that Planned Parenthood actually offers mammogram X-rays to patients has been long debunked, and needs to stop being repeated…

“Thanks to the pro-life leadership of Governor Kasich and his work with Ohio Right to Life, Ohio’s abortion industry is shrinking”, Mike Gonidakis, president of Ohio Right to Life, said in a statement.

After the release of the videos, several states defunded Planned Parenthood.

“The state, through the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) has at least 150 other sub-grantees and contractors for the affected grants and projects addressing such issues as infant mortality, violence against women, and minority HIV/AIDS”. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider. “These organizations will be required to submit proposals in order to receive funding”.

President of Planned Parenthood Action Fund Cecile Richards says the action will leave thousands of women without testing for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases and will hurt anti-domestic violence programs.

“This legislation will have devastating consequences for women across Ohio”, Richards said in a statement.
