Kasich takes Ohio; Trump, Clinton win 3 states each

“Our commander-in-chief has to be able to defend our country, not embarrass it”, she declared. The day after high-stakes contests in five states, the math and momentum point to a Donald Trump Republican presidential nomination as GOP officials grapple with whether to embrace the billionaire businessman or rally behind a longshot alternative.

Kasich, who has tried to emphasize the positive in a Republican race dominated by the pugnacious Trump, said his campaign was “about holding us together, not pulling us apart”. Trump, devoting little attention to his two remaining GOP rivals, was ready for a head-on fight with Clinton. He instead will address the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, an engagement “scheduled a while ago”, he said.

“I want you to know the campaign goes on, and it is my intention to make you proud”, said Kasich at his first victory speech.

While the Republican race remained in turmoil on Tuesday, Hillary Clinton’s victories in Florida, Illinois, Ohio and North Carolina cast doubt on US Senator Bernie Sanders’ ability to overtake her for the Democratic Party’s nomination.

Both the Republican and Democratic primaries in Missouri were too close to call on Wednesday morning.

Let’s assume Trump wins 46 percent of those delegates, just as he’s won 46 percent of delegates so far. He added that neither Trump nor Texas Sen.

“The longer Kasich stays in the race, the more it benefits Trump”, Cruz said. What the Kasich win in OH means for the GOP: But after Tuesday’s contests, it’s mathematically impossible for the OH governor to win a majority of delegates before the GOP’s July national convention.

Trump won all of Florida’s 99 delegates on Tuesday.

But several conservatives were last night planning a meeting to discuss options to stop the mogul winning. The result could very well be a contested convention in Cleveland. But states like Virginia and Nevada require delegates to vote for their pledged candidate in the first round of convention voting – no matter what.

As she had after other primary wins, Mrs Clinton was thinking about a possible match-up in the presidential election with Mr Trump. Reporter: In Florida trump’s victory silenced senator Marco Rubio’s campaign.

On the Democratic side, Clinton took at least four states.

Polls had showed Sanders narrowing her advantage in the Buckeye State, and he predicted he would win Ohio.

The Democrats’ super delegates are party leaders, including all Democratic members of the Congress and sitting Democratic governors, who are free to support any candidate. Sanders has at least 800 delegates when the count includes superdelegates. But if no one has the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination then the obligation lifts and delegates can choose any candidate. And that looks like less than a certainty after Trump’s latest victories.
