Katarina Johnson-Thompson leads heptathlon after two events, Jessica Ennis-Hill third

Canada’s world number one Brianne Theisen-Eaton lies fifth on 2,151, with two more events, the shot put – Johnson-Thompson’s weakest – and 200m to come on day one. “I wanted to be able to walk off the track knowing I went eyeballs out and gave it everything”, she said. “I’ve just got to hold everything together and know that I’ve done this before and that I can do it again”.

She has previously represented Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, winning silver in the points race and bronze in the scratch.

“It’s not over”, she said.

“I think it’s been tough for her”, she said. It’s been a while since I had any alcohol’.

JESSICA Ennis-Hill broke down in tears during an emotional interview with BBC Sport at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Team GB had an absolute stormer on this day at the London 2012 games, which is what saw it gain its moniker.

But the Briton’s 800m best is nearly 10 seconds quicker, meaning she remains favourite for gold should she hold her nerve and form under this most intense pressure. “Now I’ve got to go away and make a big decision”. I don’t want to spend a year or two chasing bits and being injured.

“I don’t want to cry”.

Belgium’s Nafissatou Thiam sealed a dramatic victory over defending champion Jessica Ennis-Hill in the seventh and final event of the heptathlon.

Ennis-Hill got off to a great start after winning the 100-meter hurdles, the first event of the heptathlon, but that would be the only portion she’d win. ‘It amounted to a silver medal so there’s no element of disappointment. “I think generally everyone didn’t run great times so yep – a mixed day but obviously glad to be leading after the first day”.

“I had prepared that I would move out at kilometre 35 and my body was responding very well, as well as my movement”.

At 30, her fierce competitive spirit is undiminished. Depending how long it takes to finish the long jump, it will be either Rutherford or Farah to finish first.

“This is my last Olympics, and it’s odd knowing I won’t be at another major championships like these”, Ennis-Hill said.

Ennis-Hill will go on holiday with Reggie and husband Andy before making a decision about her future. Minichiello has left the door open for her to return.

Ennis-Hill lost more ground on Thiam in the penultimate event, the javelin.

Anne Adams-King, chief executive officer at Welsh Cycling, added: “On behalf of Welsh Cycling, I would like to congratulate Elinor on her gold medal, alongside Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell Shand and Katie Archibald. If there are opportunities coming up, I need to start having a look at that as a career going forwards”, he continued. It really has been unbelievable’.
