Since neither Penn nor Rolling Stone wanted to upset their interview subject with overly harsh words, perhaps we should do it for them: Joaquin Guzman is a mass murderer who would not hesitate to behead law enforcement officers, torture journalists and use vats of acid to “disappear” anyone who interferes with his insatiable quest for enrichment.

Every phone call or text, every movement in the region was analyzed, the ex-official said, including Guzman’s October 2 meeting with Penn and del Castillo. Many expressed admiration and a longing for the next meeting, more than concern about the purported movie project.

The actress, who has her own tequila brand, added: “I’ll bring my tequila to share it with you, because it is a dream that I wanted to fulfill”.
“What I can say is we are gratified the capture was successful”.
Del Castillo, meanwhile, broke her silence Wednesday for the first time since Guzman’s arrest with a post to Twitter.
He replied: “I’m more excited about you than the story”.
Mexican Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong declined to say anything about them and said the Attorney General’s Office would comment on the matter soon.

While on the run, Guzman was interviewed secretly in the Mexican jungle by the actor Sean Penn for Rolling Stone magazine, just three months after he fled from Altiplano.
The murder charges in Brooklyn and in El Paso are worse crimes than the alleged drug-trafficking and money-laundering in Miami, but the Mexican government has ruled out extraditing Guzman for any capital crime, a condition that would likely nullify that advantage in those venues.
“Look at the number of cases he’s involved in… which cover several years’ worth of his criminal activity on behalf of Sinaloa Cartel”, Lynch said.
The warmth between the drug lord and the actress has surprised even Mexicans inured to the often stranger-than-fiction events of the drug war.

The explanation might simply have been infatuation – something that would not be out of character for Guzman. That Guzman has a weakness for women?
But the lawyer mentioned in that exchange denied having ever had any discussions about such an arrangement with Guzman or any of his representatives.
It would come as little surprise if Guzman’s story winds up as a splashy film project, but the irony is that his interest in seeing it told his way – and reaching out to the outside world to do so – may have been what led to his capture.

Guzman, captured on Friday six months after a brazen prison break via a mile-long tunnel that burrowed right up into his cell, is now being held in isolation in another part of the prison, a Mexican security source said.
