The day of remembrance falls on the 29th of September, as it is the feast day of the Archangel Michael, patron saint of police.

It will be preceded by a march with current and retired members, the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums, the dog squad and the mounted unit.

Since the inception of the Northern Territory police in 1870, nine officers have been killed while on duty.

It was also 10 years since the Lockhart River air disaster, which claimed 15 lives when a plane travelling from Cape York to Cairns crashed.

They included Constable Sondra Lena – who died in 1992 when she was struck by a vehicle near Rockhampton, and Constable Sally Urquhart – who was killed in a plane crash in 2005.

The National Peace Officers’ Memorial Run to Remember arrived in Ottawa on Saturday after a 460-kilometre relay that began on Thursday at the Ontario Police Memorial site in Toronto.

“I am very grateful for that and I sincerely hope that remains the case next year”.

Mr Stewart will on Tuesday attend a service at St John’s Cathedral in Brisbane’s CBD, which will be one of several held across the state.

“No matter how experienced, skilled, equipped or courageous the officer may be, at times fate and circumstances will intersect resulting in serious injury or the tragic death of an officer”. Thinking about those who have fallen can be hard, but the support shown in the attendance of not only those in the policing community, but the public as well.
