Michael Phelps debunked Ryan Lochte’s theory that he will swim again at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 by insisting that Friday night’s 100-meter butterfly final was the last individual race of his career.
But Friedman thought it was Lochte in front and that Phelps didn’t even win a medal.
Phelps ended up in a three-way deadheat for silver with South Africa’s Chad le Clos and Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, 0.75s behind Schooling’s winning time of 50.39 seconds.
In the medley, Brazil’s Thiago Pereira went off fastest, leading from Phelps after the butterfly leg, with Ryan Lochte of the United States and Hagino neck-and-neck just behind.
Missy Franklin, who won five medals four years ago in London, finished a disappointing games for her, failing to advance to the final in the 200 backstroke.
It also marked Phelps’ fourth straight win the event at the Olympics, dating back to the 2004 Athens Games.
Michael Phelps looks up at the USA flag as it’s raised during the medal ceremony Thursday, August 13, 2016, where he was awarded his 22nd career Gold Olympic Medal.
His tally now reads 22 golds, three silvers and two bronzes with every chance of one more to come.
“You just have no idea how hard it is for anybody to win an Olympic gold medal”, Bowman said.
The record: the most all-time individual Olympic titles – a mark previously held by Leonidas of Rhodes.
In Thursday night’s 200-meter individual medley, Phelps bested Lochte and the field to win his record 22nd Olympic gold.
Olympic roommates Phelps and Ryan Lochte raced against each other for the final time.

Look, I’m no Olympic commentator, but surely the golden rule is to know who you’re commentating on. “But I can’t say it’s over”, Lochte said of his career. “I think this is a life anyone can dream of, and I’m definitely living it”.
