In an interview last month with the Catholic Standard, swimmer Katie Ledecky revealed the Catholic Church has been incredibly influential in shaping her worldview, particularly as an Olympic champion.

As great as Ledecky has been, she’s still one gold behind Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, who won her third gold in Rio by capturing the 200-meter individual medley on Tuesday.

At 50 meters, Ledecky was in fifth place. She beat her best time, and broke the world record. “I just had to dig deep”. I am continually impressed in the races that she puts together. “I’m really focusing on making sure I’m doing everything I can to be the best I can be right now”.

Ledecky, meanwhile, leaves her competitors in her wake in the distance events, such as the 400 and 800 meters. “It’s always very tough mentally”.

“I’m pumped. I was so close to breaking it (this morning)”, Ledecky said. The prelims for the 800-meter freestyle are Thursday morning. The swim was nearly identical to this morning, but with a bit more pop on the last lap.

“He gets everybody fired up”, she said. She led off the relay in London, launching the U.S.to victory. “Before, I was like, ‘That’s good karma that they’re here'”.

The years between 2012 and 2016 comprised a series of unbelievable wins for Ledecky, who will begin matriculation at Stanford University in the fall. She finished a disappointing 13th in the semifinals. She placed fourth at the 2015 world championships in the 200 IM and, with an extra burst Tuesday, made the podium. The feat won her a second Olympics gold.
