The 31-year-old Phelps still has a chance to leave Rio with 23 golds in his career. “I don’t know what to believe, like, whether I actually did it or I’m still preparing for my race”.

If Ledecky were to master the 100 meters, however, it would open her to the possibility of accumulating Olympic gold medals at a more rapid pace. She is also the the first woman since America’s Debbie Meyer in 1968 to take gold in the 200-, 400- and 800- meter freestyle, according to The New York Times.

Katie Ledecky put another golden, and late, night behind her on Thursday and focused on winning a fourth title at the Rio Games in her favourite 800 metres freestyle event.

Back in 2000, he won gold in the men’s 50 free, becoming the first swimmer of African-American descent to win gold at a Games.

“I hit all my goals right on the nose this week”, she said.

Ledecky led from the start to clock eight minutes, 4.79 seconds, beating her previous mark of 8:06.68 set in Austin, Texas in January.

Then she waited for the rest of the field finish.

Ledecky was just 15 at the Summer Games four years ago, making her the youngest member of Team USA at the time.

Jazz Karlin finally touched in 8:16.17 to claim the silver, just ahead of Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas grabbing the silver in 8:16.37.

One of the blue ribbon events of the track cycling competition at Rio 2016 will see reigning world champions Australia up against reigning Olympic champions Great Britain.
