Katie Ledecky rolls in 400-meter freestyle preliminaries
At 33, Coughlin is trying to qualify for her fourth Olympics.

Katie Ledecky earned her spot for the Rio Olympics, winning the 400-meter freestyle at the US swimming trials Monday night.
“Pain is temporary”, Lochte said, “I guess”.
Kalisz said he could barely remember the race that booked his first Olympic berth. “But I’m happy to get the first one out of the way and just keep going”.
Seizing the race by the throat, Ledecky was more than two seconds under the pace of the world record of 3:58.37 she set at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia in 2014.
Another notable performance in the race came from Leah Smith, who clocked an impressive 4:00.65, the fourth quickest of all time over eight laps of the pool.
Ledecky posted the third-fastest time in history and the fastest in the world this year but said she was “more pumped” for her new side-kick.
“That’s fast”, Ledecky said. Jay Litherland – a strong closer – passed Lochte, too, touching second.
This group of U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers joins seven current, former and future members of the LSU program who competed across the world and represented six other countries this spring.
With a proud Phelps looking on, his training partner Chase Kalisz (KAY-lish) won the final Sunday night, becoming the first swimmer to make the team for the Rio Games. Conor Dwyer was tops in the event with a time of 1:46.96.
“I still can’t believe it, I’m in shock”, said Smoliga. “You’ve just got to hope and believe that you can”. Voss did not advance, but finished in 1:02.03.
Voss swam in Lane 9.
Voss entered the event seeded 29th in 1:01.63.
While she may not be dazzling out of the blocks, Franklin still has three other events to swim this week.
Smith credited Ledecky’s dominance for pushing her toward a drop of just over 21/2 seconds from her best. That calls into question his possible place on freestyle relay teams at the Olympics. Kalisz and Litherland are teammates at the University of Georgia.
“I raced her at Minnesota and I never (had) been able to see her feet before”, Smith said. “Maya DiRado and Kevin Cordes have been good since 2013 and missed out earlier”. She could make her second Olympic team by finishing first or second in the evening final.
David Plummer, owner of the fastest time in the world this year, led the way into the semi-finals of the men’s 100m backstroke in 53.22sec. Worrel’s time was 56.48 seconds, to Vollmer’s 57.21 seconds.
Like Phelps, Katie Ledecky had an easy swim in reaching the semis of the 200 freestyle in pursuit of a second event for the Rio Games. He’s been the one guy I’ve looked up to my entire life. I was a little disappointed when I touched with the time, but then you realize time doesn’t matter. “He is somebody who’s got a full schedule this week, and I would assume he would use this as motivation to get going”. “It was just a very emotional moment”.
“I don’t know what the flexibility is for swimming”.
The injury cropped up Sunday during the preliminaries of the 400 individual medley. The event’s finals are Tuesday. “Tomorrow is definitely going to be rough, and it’s going to be fast”.
Colorado native Missy Franklin tied for seventh in the 200 freestyle with Hali Flickinger in 1:58.61 at the U.S. Olympic trials on Tuesday.

Three days into the trials Phelps finally surfaced and announced his arrival with a pair of controlled and dominating efforts in the 200 butterfly. He won in the 100 back 59.18, followed by Miller at 59.26.
