Katie Ledecky swims into history with 4th gold medal
Carlin knows silver was the best she could ever get against Ledecky, who also beat her in the 400m and whose 800m time of eight minutes 4.79 seconds nearly knocked two seconds off her own world record.

Welsh swimmer Jazz Carlin has won her second silver medal of the Rio Olympics after finishing second for Great Britain in the women’s 800m freestyle final.
Proud finished strongly in the quickest race of the week but he was 0.28s off the winning time of United States veteran Anthony Ervin.
Ledecky – the U.S. Olympic swimming team’s youngest member – completed the feat “with a flourish”, the Times said, “breaking her world record in the 800 with a clocking of 8 minutes 04.79 seconds”.
The 19-year-old from suburban Washington capped off one of the greatest performances in Olympic history with her fourth gold medal and second world record, shattering her own mark in the 800-meter freestyle Friday night. But she did swim a 52.79 split in the anchor leg of the 4x100m meter freestyle relay earlier in the games, when the US took the silver medal.
There’s dominant and then there’s whatever Katie Ledecky is in Olympics swimming. So, unless Phelps decides to come out of retirement again, his final individual race at the Olympics will go down as a silver. “I’m just honored and glad to have that moment and that privilege to race alongside Michael and Chad and all those guys”.
Fellow countryman Nathan Adrian won the bronze at 21.49 seconds, while France’s Florent Manaudou took the silver at 21.41 seconds. She will leave with two more world records under her ledger, making it 13 for her career, with Friday night marking the fifth time she has lowered the record in the 800 and the third time in a little more than a year.
The Hungarian led the American by 0.57 seconds at 100 meters and by 0.48 at the final turn, but DiRado fought back and the two were neck-and-neck as they entered the final 25 meters.
FENCING: The U.S. fencing team won bronze in men’s foil, its first medal in the event in 84 years.
Carlin’s two medals come four years after she almost quit the sport.
“It’s indescribable. That is just pure joy and surprise and excitement”, she said. “If someone had told me four years ago you’d have been stood on the podium twice with two silver medals I’d have said there’s no way”. I’m going to walk away happy with what I’ve done here. And I’ll know I – I know I can set some new goals.
DiRado, who swam a winning time of 2:05.99, made sure to save her last race for the gold.
‘Two silver medals, it is an incredible feeling. Schooling says that wouldn’t have happened had Phelps not inspired him years ago.
The silver brought Phelps record to 27 career Olympic medals, 22 of those gold.

“I think the biggest thing for me throughout the meet, I’ve been able to kind of finish how I’ve wanted to”, said Phelps, who has captured four gold in Rio.
