The suggestion here would be hydrology. Facing Brazilian Mariana Silva in the first round, Szogedi, also had to deal with a very partisan crowd shouting support for her opponent.

The Americans’ second straight Olympic triumph was never in doubt, their score of 184.897 at the Rio Games more than eight points clear of the field. But no one thought she would do it this fast.

Ledecky described the race as grueling, saying she “hurt really badly” and pushed herself “to the max”. “Just to keep my tempo up”.

“I couldn’t be happier”. Where does she get her urge to win at all costs?

Ledecky held off Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom to win the 200 freestyle and give the American star her second gold of the Rio Games.

Ledecky’s US teammate Leah Smith claimed the bronze with 4:01.92. “I just knew that these three girls were going to put me in a good position to finish it out and I knew I could do it”, she added. “This will come to me tomorrow”. “It was only a matter of how fast she was going to go”.

Faster than fast, as it turned out.

Ledecky is a natural-born competitor who is always striving to clinch her next win.

The victory was particularly special for the swimmer who finished second in the 200 fly at the London Games with a mental mistake at the finish. After 300 meters, it was 3.06 seconds.

Ledecky’s winning margin of 4.77 seconds underlined her total dominance of the event. “I didn’t realise it was a world record”, Sjostrom said. You can also catch the highlights in primetime on NBC. “He’s 18 years old and he’s an Olympic champion, ” McEvoy said of Chalmers. A year later, she broke her own record in both categories. “I knew I had a lot left”.

Who does that? Katie Ledecky, that’s who.

It was Britain’s first medal in this event since they won a bronze in 1984, and made up for Guy’s disappointment in failing to pick up a medal in the 200m and 400m freestyle.

The usually bubbly American swimmer who emerged a darling of the 2012 London Games with five medals failed to make the 200-meter freestyle final. And there’s bad news for her other opponents here.

Gay Williamson, a Grand Forks resident who coached Katie’s mother, Mary Gen, and her six siblings in swimming in Williston during the 1960s, said it has been a thrill to watch Katie’s rise to the top of the swimming world.

It’s Ledecky’s second gold of the Olympics.

“I don’t realize yet I’m an Olympic champion”, Balandin said. She won four individual golds (200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyles) a feat now known as the Ledecky slam.
