Kayakers get up close and personal with a humpback whale

The footage was released by whale-watching company Sanctuary Cruises, and shows a lovely whale launching itself out of the water before landing nearly directly on top of a kayak, knocking the passengers into the water.

“Within seconds. It was very scary to watch”, Captain Michael Sack of Sanctuary Cruises wrote on his website. “I would say it was just pure coincidence and the whale maybe didn’t know they were there”, Sack told Global News.

Spending some time kayaking in the water with whales may look awesome and serene but it can also be very risky.

These kayakers were lucky to come away with their lives after this incident with a humpback whale in Moss Landing. “The subsequent factor we knew, this factor launched proper on prime of those two kayakers”. But then, one of the whales chose to do what whales do and breached right over the kayakers.

“It’s gnarly”, Sack said.

He called the encounter “the most extraordinary thing to happen to me”.

“The kayak! Where’s the kayak?” one woman can be heard saying, as others continue to cheer.

People on a Sanctuary Cruises whale tour bore witness to the terrifying sight.

“And one should realize that humpback whales are wild animals and totally unpredictable”. The resulting waves from the humpback’s motion toppled the kayak over in a quick moment that shocked many.
