Kaytranada scoops the Polaris Music Prize for ‘99.9%’

Kaytranada’s 2016 album 99% has taken out the Polaris Prize given out to the best album by a Canadian artist each year, as selected by a jury of music journalists, bloggers and broadcasters.

Also making the shortlist are Andy Shauf (“The Party”), Black Mountain (“IV”), Jesse Lanza (“Oh No”), PUP (“The Dream Is Over”), U.S. Girls (“Half Free”), White Lung (“Paradise”) and Basia Bulat (“Good Advice”).

“For me it’s insane to get the award”. “It’s really, truly, a big honor”. Shout outs to all of y’all.

“I don’t know what to do with that”.

The award is Canada’s most prestigious music prize, handed out to the country’s top album of the year, along with a $50,000 cheque. The 23-year-old Montreal-based producer has now joined the ranks of such esteemed acts as Arcade Fire, Caribou, and Godspeed!

According to the Guardian, the Haiti-born musician, who is the first victor to come from the world of hip hop/r’n’b said, “I hope that the next generation are not afraid to do more. They can do it yourself, like I did”.
