KC officer’s death was not ‘planned ambush against police’

The suspect vehicle took off as police arrived, but it crashed into a fence and the occupants bailed out at 1:36 p.m., police spokesman Tom Tomasic said Tuesday.

Kansas City, Kansas police have reported that Captain Robert Melton was shot while responding to a shooting call Tuesday afternoon.

They two suspects have not been identified, but were described by Zeigler as “18, 20 years old, young men”.

Police say Melton has three other children from previous relationships, and that Melton’s pregnant partner also has two children.

Melton’s death in Kansas City pushes the total number of law enforcement officers fatally shot in the line of duty by a suspect to 31 so far this year – up from about 16 at this point last year, and ahead of the average midyear total, which is about 25, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation data.

She also said officers and their communities need to build stronger relationships so that people being protected by the police trust them.

Melton was shot to death Tuesday while investigating a drive-by shooting.

“The hate and anti-police speech has got to stop because the consequences are real”.

The mayor of Kansas City, Kansas, says authorities don’t believe the fatal shooting of an officer was part of a planned ambush, but someone trying to evade arrest.

The suspect got out of his vehicle and shot several rounds into the rolled down passenger window of Melton’s auto.

Police did not release the suspects’ names because charges hadn’t been filed. Melton was a veteran with the United States Armed Service and a recipient of the Bronze Star award.

It’s the second time a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer has been shot and killed this year.

Melton “ended his watch” at approximately 2:55 p.m.at K.U. Hospital.
