KC’s Ventura suspended 9 games, Machado 4 games for brawl

Machado, 23, was hit Tuesday night in the series opener by a 99 miles per hour fastball from Ventura, 25, in the bottom of the fifth inning, rushed toward him and threw a punch at Ventura’s head before wrestling him to the ground as both benches emptied.

Ventura was given a nine-game suspension Thursday for his contributions to Tuesday’s bases-clearing brawl, but he will appeal, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

Turns out, Stephen Curry has not entered some level of basketball infallibility.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Machado is expected to appeal the ban.

The 23-year-old Machado managed to slip a right hand thrown by Ventura then delivered a solid right of his own which knocked the right-handed pitcher down. Machado was in the Orioles’ lineup for Thursday night’s game.

Machado was batting.303 with 15 home runs and 37 RBIs in 259 plate appearances this season.

Ventura opened the fifth-inning at-bat with a fastball that hit Machado, who immediately charged the mound.

Both players are no strangers to Major League Baseball discipline.

The trouble between Ventura and Machado started earlier in the game.

After the game, Orioles star Adam Jones said he was glad Machado defended himself and said he would pay any fine. (Ventura) has electric stuff and the talent is all there, but between the ears, there is a circuit board off balance.
