Keeping the kids safe on Halloween

Every parent wants their kids to look unbelievable on Halloween, but that shouldn’t compromise safety. “Part of the effect of what they’ve done is to recognize that they have to learn to take certain precautions not to hurt someone again”, Bassman said.

Parents should decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers, and have trick-or-treaters use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

Thousands of trick-or-treaters will be knocking on doors across Western Massachusetts Saturday night. Chicago police also suggest taking advantage of this unique Halloween on a Saturday and go out earlier. If you attend a Halloween party that includes alcohol, make sure you have a sober, designated driver for the trip home.

Halloween is an exciting night for children, but it can also be extremely unsafe.

Make sure your children dress safely. “Halloween when it’s dark children are in costume their visibility isn’t as good as it should be when they have masks on”, said Lt. Reagan.

Make sure the costumes you buy are flame resistant. “Slow down and stay alert – Watch out for cars that are turning or backing up and don’t dart out into the street or cross in between parked cars”.

Teach children to NEVER approach a vehicle, occupied or not, unless they know the owner and are accompanied by a parent or guardian. “(Make sure) they are walking alongside the sidewalk with them and not letting them get all into to the roadway”. If kids are too young to use the knife, let them draw the outline of the face on the pumpkin and the use their hands to scoop out the seeds.

Principal Rusty Corley says they made a decision to start hosting the event as a way to tackle a few of the safety concerns associated with the holiday.
