Keith Taylor: Window of opportunity smaller for Kentucky after 52-21 blowout
In SEC action on Saturday night, the Tennessee Volunteers are taking on the Kentucky Wildcats, and so far in the first half of this one, we have a pretty wild outing going on between these two. Moseley leads the Volunteers in pass breakups with eight. “He’s making a lot of plays on the run and he’s set up a lot of guys on the perimeter as well”. Well, they got just that from Dobbs and wide receiver Josh Malone.

Jalen Hurd scored on a 37-yard reception and a 4-yard run for Tennessee. Alvin Kamara had 70 yards on four carries. Defensively, Darrin Kirkland had a tackle for loss and an interception. Derek Barnett had two sacks. An 84-yard punt return for a touchdown by Cam Sutton at the 5:29 mark of the third quarter sealed it for the Vols, giving them what would become their final tally of 52-21 in a game that was finished up primarily by reserve players.
Tennessee also found points on the scoreboard after Evan Berry returned his third kickoff for a touchdown this season.
Tennessee’s junior quarterback was all over the place, accounting for four touchdowns. Ultimately the ‘Cats would have a fourth and 7 in no man’s land so they went for it. Towles scrambled for 22 yards to get into the red zone and he would scamper in on fourth and goal from the 1 a few plays later to give United Kingdom a 14-10 lead and a raucous crowd some big time momentum.
Towles was a former “Mr. Football” for the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a senior at Highlands High in Fort Thomas, and was recruited by Jones while he was head coach at Cincinnati.
Dobbs may have unleashed the best deep ball of his Tennessee career in the second quarter on the 75-yard touchdown pass to Josh Malone. Dobbs had to step up into the throw as the pocket collapsed around him, which made the throw more impressive. Both Dobbs and Butch Jones credited Hurd with his key block in protection, too.
Tennessee started Saturday’s nightmare like a slow drip through the better part of the first half, easing to a 24-14 halftime advantage. The Vols overcame a deficit as late in the second quarter and produced a powerful response by rattling off 28 straight points during one stretch.
For SEC games this season, Daniel Lewis will put together a blueprint for how Tennessee can have its best chance to knock off that week’s opponent.
Spread: Tennessee is favored by 8.5 points.
Tennessee returns to Neyland Stadium for a two-game home stand that begins with a September 17 date with Ohio.
The Wildcats come in to the game with a 4-3 record on the season.
“I planned on having a closer game, a more hard fought game but it didn’t turn out that way”, he said.
Nine of the Volunteers’ 12 games will be played inside the state of Tennessee.

Kentucky has lost to Tennessee by a combined margin of 102-37 for the past two seasons, not exactly what the Wildcats hoped for after ending a 26-game losing streak to the Vols in 2011. It was the latest in a series of heartbreaking losses for the Vols this year. Tennessee’s defense was not slacking Saturday night either. Berry was already the NCAA leader in kick return average coming into this game; even if the return is scored at an even 100 yards, Berry’s average will blossom to an insane 42.6 yards per kick.
