Kejriwal Meets Families of Dalits Thrashed for Skinning Dead Cow

The state government, the Minister said, was planning to have a special court for the trial in the case.

Videos of the four being stripped and beaten with sticks by men claiming to be cow protectors in Gujarat state last week have gone viral and have sparked protests by Dalit groups across the state.

“There have been at least three such incidents in the past two months in the area when the Dalit community members were beaten up by these so-called cow vigilante groups”.

Kejriwal further said, “BJP government in Gujarat is trying to suppress Dalits in the state”. The protests worsened yesterday as seven youth attempted suicide and violence and arson spread to various areas in the state.

A junior minister in the Narendra Modi government today urged Dalit youths from across the country to desist from removing cow carcasses and called on the cow protection brigades to carry out the task. “The JD(U) has chose to send a delegation of parliamentarians to Gujarat on July 23 under the leadership of party’s senior leader and Rajya Sabha member Sharad Yadav to meet the victims and share their pain”. They were skinning a dead cow.

She told the family that her government was taking strict action against the culprits and 16 of them were already arrested, an official release said. The issue has gathered a political steam with the proposed visit of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to Una on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Kaushik Parmar, who led the fact-finding team to the Mota Samadhilya village where the incident took place, said: “We have found out that this inhuman incident of beating Dalit youths was not a one-off”. Our data shows that between 2001 and 2016, many incidents of Dalit atrocities have been reported.

Although Dalits have 7 per cent reservation in education and government jobs, they are handicapped by a range of social factors.

“Our politics is for justice of Dalits, while BJP’s politics is for trampling upon them”, Mr Kejriwal said in reply to a question on politics behind the visit. Singh also went on to count the schemes by the NDA Government to improve the life of Dalits and the poor. In the past year there were a number of incidents of such groups raiding slaughter house and intercepting vehicles transporting animals as they assume that they going to be slaughtered.
