Kell Brook to face huge test as Gennady Golovkin fight is confirmed

The Kazakh has yet to fight on United Kingdom soil, but has sold out Madison Square Garden and the Forum in Inglewood, California. This is real shocking news, as Golovkin was previously in negotiations with middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr.

Four months removed from his last fight, Golovkin is now looking to improve his unblemished record to 36-0.

It has just been officially announced that three-belt world middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin will defend his titles September 10 against IBF welterweight titlist Kell Brook at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Brook has fought nearly exclusively in England, though he traveled to Los Angeles in 2014 to win the 147-pound title from Shawn Porter. Now, Brooks will be Golovkin’s opponent on September 10 at the O2 Arena in London.

Said Brook: “This is the fight and the moment I have been waiting for for some time”.

‘We’ve tried and tried to lure the best to come and fight me and now we’ve got the best of the best – the No 1 fighter in the world is coming to the UK.

‘I accepted the chance within minutes and I can’t wait for what will be the ultimate fight, one of the biggest worldwide fights in Britain in many years’.

“Everyone knows I’m a huge welterweight and I know I will carry my speed and accuracy and even more power through the weights”. They had deadline and they chose not to take the fight. He also said that they were really leaning towards landing a fight with either Saunders or Froch.

Brook had made mention about a potential fight with Golovkin, but the idea did not appear to gain much traction. “Hopefully Eubank has more desire than those two, as he states in his public comments”.

Golovkin had hoped to get Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez in a middleweight showdown, but turned elsewhere after Alvarez gave up his piece of the 160-pound title rather than meet him in September. Here are some highlights of Golovkin’s previous fights.

“I can not tell you how excited I am for this mega fight”, said Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

Hearn – who promoted both fighters – said: “I couldn’t be happier for Kell”.

Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) is going to be facing a smaller man, but Brook does cut a great deal of weight and is among the biggest welterweights on the planet right now. With 71 wins between them, 57 by knockout and no defeats, its a wonderful clash and a huge opportunity for Sheffields ‘Special One.
