Saint Patrick Was… British? His name, before adopting “Patrick”, was thought to be Maewyn Succat. 385 and his parents were Roman citizens.
Sierra Vista, Ariz., freshman, Becca Rose said she had never heard the legend of St. Patrick, but that the holiday is one of her favorites. He fled to England at age 22 and took refuge in a monastery in Gaul for 12 years, where he studied for the priesthood and was ordained a bishop. However, he later returned after becoming ordained as a minister with a mission to bring Christianity to the Emerald Isle. St. Patrick’s Day became a national holiday in 1903, but the Irish diaspora around the globe helped make the day a worldwide celebration of all things Irish. Artwork often depicts Ireland’s patron saint wearing blue garments. The shamrock was used as a political statement to represent Irish Nationalism. That all changed in the 17th century.
Chris Hadfield took photographs of Ireland from earth orbit, and a picture of himself wearing green clothing in the space station, and posted them online on Saint Patrick’s Day in 2013. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through the city.
So can non-Irish people celebrate Halloween?
Lively St. Patrick’s Day parties are held in the US, Australia and Europe. This year’s NY event is sold out but there are others taking place in different cities. You read that correctly.
About 200 people have packed into Australia’s longest-running pub to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. The club has a slate of St. Patrick’s Day offerings, including a party on Saturday featuring Bo Fitzgerald and the YankeeCelt Band.
On March 17, hundreds in Loudoun County will don green and celebrate the patron saint of Ireland.
Most of the information I could find has to do with leprechauns. Can’t attend? You can get some friends and family members together and have your own sober St Patrick’s celebration instead.
St Patrick is supposed to have used the shamrock to teach the Irish about the Holy Trinity: the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.
