Kelly believes No. 18 Notre Dame ready for No. 12 Spartans
Davis was granted a sixth-year of eligibility by the NCAA during the Spartans’ bye week, a little more than a year after the senior lost a season after tearing a knee ligament. O’Connor did fine against Furman, but Notre Dame’s a completely different beast. The fans – and players – snapped back to life.

The Irish stormed back into the contest late with Kizer throwing a touchdown pass to Equanimeous St.
After scoring 21 unanswered points, Brian Kelly elected to trust his defense with Notre Dame down eight with 3:30 left in the game and the Irish facing a 4th and 7 in their own territory.
Almost a half-century later, former Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian still believes he made the right decision at the end of what would become the most famous tie in college football history. When Kelly was thriving at Central Michigan, he was a reported finalist for the open Michigan State job in 2006. Notre Dame will strike early, and often, leaving the Spartan offense reeling as they desperately try to play catch up. But on Saturday, it was the nation’s No. 12 team going into the house of the No. 18 team and serving notice to the rest of the nation that Sparty won’t be deterred by its semifinal flameout last season. That was just to rub it in and really drive the stake into the heart of the Irish as they tried to shift the momentum from the play.
“You have to play physical football”, Kelly said when asked his first question about Michigan State. “Sometimes those are bang-bang type situations where you’re trying to everybody’s trying to do the right thing, so not looking backward”. The Irish attempted a hail mary before the half, but the play ultimately ended with an incomplete as MSU enjoyed a 15-7 lead at the half.
Third-ranked Ohio State visits 14th-rated Oklahoma, 12th-rated Michigan State plays at No. 18 Notre Dame and Nebraska hosts 22nd-ranked OR before opening league play.
Michigan State wasn’t off last week because the Spartans wanted extra time to prepare for Notre Dame.
This was a Michigan State defense that saw its longtime chief, Pat Narduzzi, graduate to head-coaching status at Pitt two years ago.
Spartans coach Mark Danonio put it best after the game: “You have to be able to measure up”. After a slow start, Gerald Homes and LJ Scott combined for 198 yards and three touchdowns including a game-high 73-yard rush by Gerald Holmes.
The Michigan State defense would continue to shut down Notre Dame’s offense as they forced yet again a three and out. He tucked the ball and sprinted downfield.
The College Football Playoff doesn’t look kindly on teams with two losses. Maybe I’m just being irrational, but who cares!
As Saturday turned to Sunday following a long night at Notre Dame Stadium, Notre Dame’s postgame interviews focused primarily on the Irish’s deficiencies.
However, Notre Dame subsequently went on three touchdown drives of at least 65 yards, closing the gap to one possession. In the 1984 Orange Bowl, top-ranked Nebraska cut No. 5 Miami’s lead to 31-30 with 48 seconds left on a 24-yard touchdown run by Jeff Smith on fourth and 8.
There’s a word that always seems to pop up when Michigan State Football is mentioned.
Sandwiched around last week’s game against Nevada, the Irish have given up 1,018 yards and 86 points against two good opponents. On the next drive, Kizer pump-faked and found tight end Durham Smyth for a 12-yard TD pass that sliced MSU’s lead to 36-28.
Before making the move to NBC earlier this year, Tirico called numerous Michigan State basketball games on ESPN.

One play later, O’Connor tossed a short end around to R.J. Shelton for a 10-yard touchdown.
