Kelly: Niners to look at everything with QB situation

Despite fans chanting his name during Thursday night’s loss to the Cardinals, widely-debated 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is reportedly in-line for a contract re-structure that concerns guarantees regarding injuries, first reported by NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport on Friday. Now, it appears as though the fans are pushing for the move too. At one point in the third quarter, a chant of “We want Kap!”

Behind another uninspiring performance from signal-caller Blaine Gabbert, the 49ers suffered a 33-21 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals and are faced with a dilemma over their struggling offense.

While there is plenty of blame to throw around after the team allowed seven sacks and a safety, committed three turnovers and punted on four straight possessions to open the game, the focus right now will be on the quarterback position. Gabbert was 18-31 Thursday night with 162 passing yards, one touchdown pass, two interceptions, 70 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. “I don’t know if he had a chance to step up in the pocket and make the throw, but besides that, I thought Blaine played a good game”. It’s been made clear Kaepernick doesn’t have a good relationship with 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, evident by Kaepernick’s trade request last February and the fact they didn’t sit down to have a conversation until the start of training camp five months later. “Sixteen games. So we have to come back to work ready to go”.

“I played him in the first game”. However, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, some 49ers players believe Christian Ponder is the best option to start, not Kaepernick. “Just get one win and try to stack them”, defensive lineman Calais Campbell said. While this doesn’t necessarily guarantee that Blaine Gabbert is about to be replaced with Kaepernick, it has led to a lot of debate among fans and National Football League analysts about what the team should do.

Smith had a couple of outbursts during Sunday’s loss to Dallas when he was targeted just twice all game. “So I think sometimes you worry in those situations when you see a bunch of guys that seem like they just don’t care”.

Kelly said he will use the time off over the weekend to evaluate his entire offense, which could mean considering a promotion for backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who missed the bulk of the offseason program recovering from three surgeries on his left-shoulder, right thumb and left knee. “(He) did some nice things at times and did some things I think he wants back”. He brought it here to San Francisco.
