Kendall Sanders trial turns to defense

A jury has found former University of Texas football player Kendall Sanders not guilty in his sex assault trial. He would have one year of college eligibility remaining.

Sanders and fellow receiver Montrel Meander were suspended from the Texas football team after they were arrested and charged with sexual assault in July 2014.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Sanders is now “cleared of all wrongdoing” in a June 2014 incident in which Sanders was accused of forcing himself on a UT student in an on-campus dorm. Sanders had faced two to 20 years in prison if convicted. Jane Doe testified she told Sanders she wasn’t interested in having sex with him but that Sanders responded by saying, “You’re going to like it”.

However, because the accuser admitted to having “casual sex” with Meander, the prosecution is unsure how it will proceed with the charge against Meander.

Meander, who is due to stand trial on the same sexual assault charge as Sanders, was in the courtroom Thursday to listen to closing statements. Roark theorized that the alleged victim concocted the story out of fear that a photo would surface that Sanders took during the encounter. “But that doesn’t mean he’s not guilty”.
