“I wanted to come out here with a vengeance to show these girls what I have”, said the 23-year-old, who defeated the three women who will represent the U.S. in Rio. I am ready to defend my Olympic titles. The main thing is I am injury free.

The Londoner, in his final race before the Rio, finished more than 15 seconds ahead of Scot Andy Butchart, who came through strongly to take second.

Harrison missed out on a place in the United States team for the Rio Games and set her sights on breaking the world record after that heartbreak.

The world record breakthrough comes after disappointments for Harrison that extend back to the 2015 world championships in Beijing, where she was disqualified for a false start in the semifinals. “I’ve always respected her, we’ve come through the ranks together, through high school and everything, so I know what she’s been through”.

The running world record she beat has been in place since August 20, 1988, when it was set by Bulgaria’s Yordanka Donkova.

He had to work hard for his victory, with both Edward and Gemili closing him down, but he powered through in a headwind to record the fifth fastest time of the year, showing no ill effects on his comeback as he performed a lap of honour and posed for fans and photographers with his usual mischief. She was really happy and yelling and full of emotions, just like I was. Nobody wants to see it, but we have to do what is right. She has earned USATF Athlete of the Week three times this year, her last for her then-American record in Eugene.

She picked up a cheque for $50,000 for hew new world record, a record she says she intends to break before the season is over. Of course, I still feel well down about not making the team but I didn’t give it my best that day and it showed.

In that race, British runner Tiffany Porter (12.70sec) and Jessica Ennis-Hill (13.04sec) were sixth and eighth respectively.

The newly-laid track in Stratford is clearly very quick. There was also a big personal best for British 1500m man Charlie Grice back in ninth – his 1.45.53 run almost 1.5 seconds faster than he’s run before. The fastest man in the world is now the owner of 6 Olympic gold medals. As he hit the straight and the crowd expected the sort of surge that brought him three Olympic golds on the same track four years ago, it didn’t happen.

The British women’s 4x100m team of of Asha Philip, Desiree Henry, Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita proved they are capable of reaching the podium in Rio, sending a resounding statement by storming to victory in 41.81seconds.
