“I thought it was about the accolades and the cars and the clothes”, Lamar said on accepting the rap album Grammy, “but it’s really about expressing yourself and putting that paint on the canvas for the world to evolve for the next listener, for the next generation”. They will be joined on stage by a group of suicide attempt and loss survivors, which should make for emotional viewing.
The stage soon became chaotic, with the soldiers crowding around Lamar in a furious marching dance.
“I am honored to win an award, finally, and I wanted to thank everyone at Netflix, at ‘Saturday Night Live, ‘ at ‘The Chappelle Show, ‘” he said.
Lamar then concluded his six-minute performance, receiving a standing ovation and much praise online from celebrities.
Another bang was heard and Chappelle appeared briefly again.
The Weeknd, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Little Big Town, Reba McEntire, LCD Soundsystem, Portugal the Man and Shakira also won early awards.
Following the performance, Grammys host Corben walked through the crowd to dish on the acts set to perform tonight.
The night also saw performances from Lady Gaga, Sam Smith, Pink and Patti LuPone, who sang Evita’s Don’t Cry For Me Argentina as part of a tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber.
