SAN DIEGO (AP) – Ian Kennedy, being mentioned in various trade scenarios, pitched six strong innings and the San Diego Padres defeated the Miami Marlins 3-1 on Saturday night.
He gave up three runs and seven hits with a season-high four walks over 5 2-3 innings in a 3-1 loss at Arizona on Monday. He was lifted from the game after giving up consecutive hits following a one-out walk. He also helped himself by hitting a double and scoring. Shortstop Clint Barmes opened the inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch by right-handed reliever Sam Dyson and reached third third on a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Abraham Almonte. He has given up five home runs in his last two starts after having allowed just two homers over a five-game stretch. The run came on a homer by Miami third baseman Derek Dietrich leading off the seventh.
“I keep up to date with some stuff but it is not fun for anybody especially having a family”.
“I just didn’t want him to make the call yet because I felt like I could get out of it, ” Cashner said. The win put an end to a three-game skid and hopefully tonight they can get a winning streak going and clinch at least a series split against Miami. “I’m telling you, I got this.'” Murphy said.
For Saturday’s game the Padres start Ian Kennedy who has allowed 92 hits and 48 earned runs while striking out 82 over 90.1 innings for a 5-9 record and a 4.78 ERA. It was Kimbrel’s 27th save in 28 chances. Kennedy doubled with two outs in the bottom of the second and scored on a Will Venable RBI single, making it a 2-0 contest.
“I’m not pitching well enough to win right now and it is really driving me nuts”, Phelps said.
“He was good from the start to the finish, his velocity was there”, Murphy said.
“Even when he got into trouble with men on he executed his pitches when he needed to”, he said.
Miami’s Dan Haren has had to pitch before with trade rumors swirling around him. Suzuki, who is 38th on the all-time hit list, enters the final game of the set still seeking those two hits.
Marlins: Not only is RHP David Phelps (4-6, 3.91 ERA) pitching against San Diego for the first time, he has only faced two Padres: Melvin Upton Jr. and Derek Norris (3 ABs each). The decorated Enberg, hired by the Padres in 2010, was accepting the Ford Frick Award in Cooperstown, N.Y., which is presented annually for excellence in broadcasting by the National Baseball Hall of Fame. RHP Henderson Alvarez (right shoulder inflammation) suffered a setback after his last rehab start and will be re-examined. Surgery is a possibility…. 2B Dee Gordon (thumb) took batting practice at the Marlins’ year-round training base in Jupiter, Fla., and could start a rehab assignment Tuesday.
