Kenyan security, just days after President Kenyatta’s visit to the coast, were clearly on high alert as they prevented a major terror attack against the main police station in Mombasa. At least one police officer was reportedly injured though details presently are patchy and updates are expected from sources in Mombasa later today.

The fire was put out and the station sealed off by heavily armed police officers as the probe gets under way.

Mr Maelo added that one of them later threw a knife at one of the officers while the other threw a petrol bomb at the report officer.

Police said they are seeking two men who accompanied the women.

“This is terrorism, they were definitely on a mission”, he said.

Maelo said one took out a knife and stabbed the officer manning the report desk forcing his colleagues to shoot them.

Kenya faces a constant danger of being attacked by adherents of the Somali militant group al-Shabab, which has vowed retribution for Kenyan troop presence in Somalia.

Al-Shabab said it was behind the massacre at Garissa University in April 2015, in which 147 people were killed, and the attack on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping centre in 2013 in which 68 people were killed.
