On 15 September, the Supreme Court scrapped the death sentence given to convict Govindachamy in Soumya murder case.

Soumya’s mother broke down before media today after she came to know of Supreme Court’s order commuting Govindachamy’s death.

A three- member bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Prafulla C Panth delivered the verdict on the petition filed by Govindachamy challenging the death sentence.

The top court today said there is no evidence that she was thrown off the train and did not jump off.

The prosecution case was that Gonvidachamy had pushed Soumya out of the compartment of the Ernakulam-Shoranur passenger train on February 1 after trying to rob her. He shifted her to a nearby lonely place and, placing her in between two railway tracks and raped her. He also jumped off and then allegedly hit her head with a stone and raped her.
