Kerber beats Vinci to advance to US Open semis
The match had looked an intriguing one between Kerber, who has Serena Williams’s World No.1 ranking in her sights, and the 33-year-old Vinci, who discovered a fountain of youth at Flushing Meadows last year where she reached the finals.

“I feel really sorry for her as I have had that injury before”, said 26-year-old Wozniacki who will now return to the top 30 as a result of her surprise run in NY.
“She’s on fire. She’s won a lot of matches”. But Kerber has proved herself a legitimate champion, and unlike eight months ago in Melbourne, a win by the German wouldn’t come as a shock.
Garbiñe Muguruza beat Williams in the French Open final.
She’s gone on to win in Stuttgart, reach the Wimbledon final (falling to Williams) and earn a silver medal at the Olympics.
She says she has nobody to replace Cermak immediately. It’s great to have her like an idol actually.
“The main thing is that when I’m on court I have to believe in myself”.
The stranglehold Williams has on women’s tennis hasn’t been seen since the early days of Steffi Graf’s legendary run. I could have played wonderful but still lost.
Angelique Kerber of Germany continues quest to take over the No. 1 ranking with Tuesday’s win.
The Australian Open champion won 28 of 38 points played in the second set as the seventh-seeded Italian surrendered meekly. However, she wrestled control of the match by winning three straight games to take the opener 7-5. At 15-30, Kvitova served an ace, so she thought, but Kerber challenged the ruling and the ball was called out, giving Kerber two break points.
The problem with Kerber has always been a mediocre serve and an inability to hit winners, which led to her mental breakdowns.
A disconsolate Vinci served just 25 percent and won only five of 20 points played on her serve waving the white flag. “I love this tournament”.
Novak Djokovic moved into the U.S. Open semifinals for the 10th consecutive year when No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga stopped because of a hurt left knee. He missed a short forehand, pushing it into the net. Williams handled Kerber, 6-3, 7-5, and they have not met at the U.S. Open since, but if they do face off this year, it will be in the final as the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the world, respectively. Immediately after the match, Pennetta announced she would leave the tour after last season. Kerber’s confidence and unerring baseline assault was too much for Vinci. “I know how to win big matches”.
Larisa Savchenko was the last Latvian woman to make the quarterfinals of a Slam at Wimbledon in 1994.
At last year’s U.S. Open, Vinci stunned Williams in the semifinals, ending the American’s bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam. But Pouille broke back to 4-all.
“Kerber made quick work of…” Anyone’s match to win. “For that to be in a Grand Slam is pretty cool”.
The 10th-seeded Monfils beat an error-prone Pouille 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in an all-French quarterfinal that concluded under Arthur Ashe Stadium’s retractable roof.

Monfils is quite a character himself: In the middle of one point Sunday, he pretended to lean over to tie a shoelace before quickly resuming play.
