Kerber caps season with US Open title

“When I was a kid I was always dreaming to be the number one player in the world and win Grand Slams and today is the day I won my second Slam here, especially in NY”.

Djokovic, the 2011 and 2015 champion, had been seeking a third major of the year and 13th of his career.

“It all started for me here in NY five years ago when I reached the semifinals and now I am here with the trophy, ” she added.

In the middle of September, with the temperature in the upper 80s and the heat of battle over 100, Angelique Kerber did a snow angel.

Furthermore, before NY she had never got beyond the third round of a Slam in 17 attempts. But Pliskova made up for it in the final game, acing and eventually winning the set on an unforced error.

When Pliskova’s final forehand sailed out, Kerber was launched on a joyous celebration, climbing into box where coach Torben Beltz was sitting then returning to the court where the tears flowed. Kerber also had the advantage of already winning the Australia Open at the beginning of the year. “It’s always tough to play them”.

Kerber embraced the big stadiums, the boisterous crowds, the notion she belonged on those stages.

In the end, when Pliskova upset Williams in the semifinals, Kerber was guaranteed to be No. 1 when the next rankings come out Monday. Usually in years past she gets more caught out in the first week, not the second week. It wasn’t long that Kerber entered the junior circuit where she participated in tournaments in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

Despite all of the misgivings the tennis tour has brought on Kerber, she manages to rise above it all and produce not only wins but also titles.

“I mean, definitely, I would say now that she deserves to be No. 1”, Pliskova said. Angelique has won 11 ITF titles in singels and 3 in doubles.

But she’s at pains to point out she’s never wanted to model herself on the German superstar. It was always my goal to pass the third round, and I made it to the final.

“I was just believing in myself in the third set and going for it”.

Djokovic quickly took a 2-0 lead in the tiebreaker before both players battled in a long and intense exchange that featured Djokovic saving two potential Wawrinka winners, until Wawrinka landed a flawless forehand volley to get the crowd roaring in awe. Angelique Kerber also had the lead on the breakers; breaking Pliskova two times in three break point opportunities.

“You have to embrace it”, Fernandez said.

Serena Williams has played only eight tournaments, too few, and it remains unsure whether she will bother turning up for the year-end WTA Championships in Singapore next month.

Amidst the disappointment she was looking forward to building on her breakthrough Slam performance. Kerber, however, accentuated the fact that she is now the top-ranked player by beating Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals in two sets.

Serena said a left knee injury sustained in the second round of the Open – that she apparently aggravated during her quarterfinal win over Simona Halep – hampered her mobility in the semis.

But she fought back in the third set and wore down the towering Czech, who started to wilt in the punishing conditions, hunching over her racket at the end of nearly every point.

She said her first call after her Australian Open triumph would be to her grandparents in Puszczykowo, Poland, where they run the Centrum Tenisowe Angie tennis academy and where the Bremen-born Kerber is now based.
