Kerber takes top spot after latest win

The derailing of Williams’ bid for a record-setting seventh US Open title kept the American stalled at 22 Grand Slam singles titles – tied with Graf for most in the Open era.

The American’s 186-week reign as world number one is over after the 6-2 7-6 (7-5) loss to Czech Pliskova at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday.

Pliskova will meet Angelique Kerber in Saturday’s final, Kerber beating a resurgent Caroline Wozniacki in the night’s second semifinal, 6-4, 6-3.

If you handicap this match based off what both players have done in the their careers, especially this year, Kerber should win in a landslide. “Yeah, serious left knee problems”.

‘I just blame that on thinking about my leg and just not thinking about the shot’. My mind was just a little bit everywhere. “But it was what it was”. Oh, and she also made the final at the Olympics, too.

Serena had needed to make the final and beat Kerber if she was to retain her World No.1 status. “It’s really special. The match with Venus helped me, not only with the game, but also with the crowd”. “I’m a professional player and have been playing for over 20 years”. Like I was making errors I never make.

“I don’t believe it”, said Pliskova, who had never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam in 17 prior attempts.

World class player Serena Williams faced big heat in US Open semifinals.

“That shows me also that I think I’m growing and I’m not putting the pressure on my shoulders if something like this happens”, Kerber said.

“I will go out there trying to get my next chance against her and take revenge, of course”. Williams is now tied with Steffi Graf on 22. “I don’t talk about that whatsoever”, she said. While Williams’s serve has always been reckoned the most powerful weapon in women’s tennis, 11th-ranked Pliskova came into the contest boasting a tour-leading 439 aces. “Not just enjoy but to win”, she said. “For me, it’s just awesome to be after Steffi the next No.1 player in Germany”, said Kerber, who at 28 will become the oldest player to reach No.1. “I wasn’t at 100 per cent, but she deserved to win”.

“Obviously, she’s had a great year”, Wozniacki said.

“I was pretty calm today”, Pliskova told The Guardian. “Sometimes it is like this”.

“If someone is not ready and she doesn’t think she is ready, she should not go on the court”.

Kerber would have overtaken Williams to the top spot last month if she had defeated Pliskova in the final of Cincinnati Open on 21 August. “Even if I don’t get it, it’s still a big result”.
