Kerber wins US Open title
At 4-4, Kerber kept her calm and ended a spectacular run with a love game. “I’d like to congratulate you on everything you have done”, said Wawrinka who has now won his last 11 finals. “This was what I was trying to improving with the pressure”, Kerber said afterwards.

Kerber’s stellar defense put pressure on Pliskova to go after big shots, and the 24-year-old Czech made just enough errors to decide that match.
Angelique Kerber beat Karolina Pliskova in a thriller, 6-3 4-6 6-4, to win the US Open and claim her second grand slam title of 2016.
She is the first woman from Germany to be ranked No.1 since Steffi Graf, who has been a mentor for Kerber.
“This mental strength was a life-saver when I was trailing 3-1 in the third set”, she said.
“And here, to now being a grand-slam champion from the US Open, the second title in one year, that gives me a lot of confidence as well that it’s not one grand slam that I won at the beginning of the year”. “If she’s a break down, she never gives up”. Kerber will inherit No1 ranking from Serena Williams on Monday. “It all started for me here in NY five years ago when I reached the semi-finals and now I am here with the trophy”, she added.
Angelique Kerber is one set from her second major title of 2016.
Kerber outlasted Karolina Pliskova in the final at Flushing Meadows on Saturday to clinch her second grand slam title of the year, after winning her first at the Australian Open in January.
She further added ” It is incredible to win this tournament.
Her rocket to the baseline on the next point left Kerber helpless and the match was level at two sets apiece.
Thus, menacingly therefore, Pliskova offered herself a major force to stop the German invasion.
Kerber, who is taking over the No. 1 ranking for the first time, is in her third major final of the year, while this is the first of Pliskova’s career.
It was his first NY title, following his breakthrough 2014 Australian Open triumph and 2015 Roland Garros crown.
Early in what would become a tight test of a U.S. Open final, Angelique Kerber sprinted forward to somehow reach a drop shot and scoop a down-the-line victor that landed in a corner of the court.
Serena Williams, whose dominance has come to make both her and sister Venus the face of competitive tennis globally, is turning 35 this year, and bad knees are likely winding down her time as an active athlete.
“This is also special that she is German”.
He broke for 2-0 having won the first point of the game with two extreme, against-the-odds retrievals.
The Scot was playing his fourth major final in men’s doubles and has gone one step further at Flushing Meadows than a year ago, when he finished a runner-up alongside John Peers.
