Kerry says North Korea nuclear test ‘highly provocative’

That’s comparable to readings from North Korea’s most recent plutonium test in 2013.

North Korea is thought to have a handful of rudimentary nuclear bombs and has spent decades trying to flawless a multistage, long-range missile to carry smaller versions of those bombs.

“It’s worth remembering, North Korea was able to obtain nuclear weapons because of an agreement negotiated by the Clinton administration”, the Texas Republican said in a Wednesday statement.

News of the blast was televised to the North Koreans on big screen TVs.

Clement also noted the continued imprisonment of a Canadian in North Korea, Rev. Hyeon Soo Lim.

Last August, the two countries traded artillery fire over the issue before striking a deal that ended the broadcasts and pledged other measures to ease tensions that had escalated sharply in the summer.

The United States is still doing the work needed to learn more about the North’s test, he added.

South Korea has also begun limiting entry to the Kaesong industrial park in North Korea, which is jointly run by both countries.

Seoul said the broadcasts will start Friday. This absolutely can not be tolerated and we strongly condemn this act….

After Wednesday’s meeting, the council, which includes China, Russia and the United States, together condemned the test as a “clear violation of (past) resolutions… and of the nonproliferation regime”. The explosion also drew criticism from Russian Federation and Japan.

They burned an effigy of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and cut apart the North Korean flag. Nuclear-tipped missiles could then be used as deterrents and diplomatic bargaining chips – especially against the US, which Pyongyang has long pushed to withdraw its troops from the region and to sign a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War. “We still don’t know if they do have that capability”.

The H-bomb test is the fourth nuclear test by the country, which has previously conducted three nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.

So what could North Korea have done instead? Crucially, its main ally, China, has proved either unwilling or unable to help.

Atomic bombs rely on fission, or atom-splitting, just as nuclear power plants do.

A US government source said Washington believes North Korea had set off the latest in a series of tests of old-fashioned atomic bombs, of which it has dozens.

Japan and the USA early on Thursday confirmed to closely cooperate to cope with the hydrogen bomb test conducted by North Korea on Wednesday.

“They may exaggerate, somewhat, their accomplishment for effect – not that they haven’t entered the nuclear era – it certainly seems they have – but it would appear that they may be working on the hydrogen fusion bomb project – rather than having completed it”, said Pearson.
