Since getting shut out in their first three games of the season by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Padres have been hitting a little better.
The Los Angeles Dodgers last dropped seven straight home games in 1993.
Right-hander Colin Rea and three relievers combined to hold the Dodgers hitless in the final 5 1/3 innings while retiring 16 of the final 18 batters.Rea (2-1) retired the final seven batters he faced, conceded just two runs on four hits in six innings, induced 11 groundouts, walked three (one intentionally) ad struck out three.
Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run homer during a four-run ninth as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 and Scott Schebler hit an RBI double in the 11th inning as the Cincinnati Reds ended their six-game losing streak with a 6-5 win over Pittsburgh.
Nick Castellanos hit a three-run homer as the Detroit Tigers edged the Minnesota Twins 6-5 for their fifth straight victory while the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 9-6 and the Kansas City Royals ended a five-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
Last night’s home run was a big one too, breaking a tie and at his old home Dodger Stadium in the top of the 8th inning no less. The southpaw has thrown over 100 pitches in three of his four starts this year, despite reaching the sixth inning only twice.
Kershaw struck out 14 and carried a ideal game into the fifth inning.
Pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale starred in Major League Baseball on Sunday, leading their teams to wins.
The Padres’ pitching performance was dominant as well, giving up only three hits, two of which came in the third inning. “I don’t (see) Drew shying away from it”, Padres manager Andy Green said. San Diego isn’t expected to do much in the NL West this season as they have a ton of teams to compete with including the Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Arizona Diamondbacks but they have been able to grab some pretty impressive wins this season so far with Saturday being among them.

Kershaw is 6-0 with an 0.98 ERA in his last nine starts against the Padres. This was his 45th career game with double digits in strikeouts. “I threw a bad pitch to Ellis, Kershaw bounced one up the middle, and that’s the game, I guess”, Pomeranz said. Kemp, who hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth inning of Friday’s series-opening 5-1 victory is hitting. Shields is 13-11 with a 3.86 ERA in 38 starts with San Diego since signing a four-year, $75 million contract in February 2015 as a free agent. Against them, he is 1-4 with a 5.15 ERA in five career starts.
