Kevin White: Bears rookie WR White won’t be ready Week 1?

The Chicago Bears are in training camp without rookie Kevin White healthy and reports have the wideout starting the season on the PUP list for quarterback Jay Cutler and that means players like Alshon Jeffery, Eddie Royal and Marquess Wilson will have to step up with him out of the lineup. Later Thursday, the Bears gave no hint that’s the case, though they gave no indication of a timeline for a return either.

“He hasn’t done any running on hard ground”, Rapoport said. So there’s a plan in place to kind of bring him back at the right pace.

“Next week, we’ll bring him out, he’ll do some light running – you’ll probably see that early next week”, GM Ryan Pace confirmed Thursday on WSCR-AM. “We don’t want to rush him”.

Asked if there’s fear that this is a chronic problem for White, Pace responded, “Once we get it under control, we should be good”.

White has been off the field for offseason workouts while dealing with a shin issue and now it looks like White could be out for the opening of the season. “You can call it splints, call it whatever you want”. “I don’t think so”.

As the smart guys at Rotoworld have noted at several points in the offseason, Fox is known for taking it slowly with rookies, and we saw an example (note: this is a very loose comparison due to their completely different situations) of this last year with Indiana product Cody Latimer. That performance-combined with an awe-inspiring show at the NFL Combine-made him the 7th overall pick.

“The key to that is getting off your legs, especially the pounding on the grass”, Fox said. This guy figures to play a huge role for the Bears this season, but that could all come crashing down if he cannot get any reps in with the team over the next four weeks of preseason action. “He hasn’t done anything in seven weeks”.
