Khizr Khan: John McCain was my son’s ‘hero’

In unseemly, combative statements over several days, Trump went after the parents, questioning whether Hillary Clinton’s campaign wrote the speech and wondering if Ghazala Khan was prevented by her religion from speaking publicly. And he disputed their right to question his grasp of the Constitution.

“McCain’s window to take a principled stand and abandon Trump has closed”.

His running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, was confronted at an event in Nevada by a woman who said her son serves in the U.S. Air Force.

Ghazala Khan later explained that she didn’t speak at the convention because she was in too much emotional pain.

In his statement, McCain recalled how Humayun Khan died, saying that when a suicide bomber aimed his vehicle toward a building housing hundreds of USA soldiers, the captain told his subordinates to stay away, then ran toward it. McCain thanked the Khans for coming to America, saying “your son was the best of America, and the memory of his sacrifice will make us a better nation – and he will never be forgotten”.

The whole situation, he said, got “blown out of proportion”, saying Trump doesn’t want to see any more Americans killed.

Trump also claimed on stage that one of the family members handed him a campaign contribution in the form of a check. Meredith said in an interview.

Meredith says the letter posted Monday on the VoteVets.org website includes 23 Gold Star families from across the nation. Zappala’s son, Army Sgt. Sherwood R. Baker, was also killed in Iraq in 2004.

Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa said Trump’s comments “are not in line with my own beliefs about how the members of the military and their families should be treated”.

Using remarkably blunt language, she argued that the election of Mr. Trump, whom she called “a dishonest demagogue”, could lead the country “on a very unsafe journey”. “Nobody should say anything other than ‘Thank you for your service'”. Khan in particular attacked Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States and pointed out that his son Humayun would not have been allowed into the United States under this proposal.

Whether McCain spoke from the heart or not, what he said is important because Trump doesn’t represent the values of this country. And while Whitman isn’t leaving the GOP over Trump, some Republicans are. If we vote for him, shame on us. “You tell me”, Trump said. “They continue to inspire us every day, every moment”.

Later in the broadcast, we’ll bring you the comments of both Khizr and Ghazala Khan, a rare glimpse of them as they visit their son’s grave in Arlington National Cemetery. Army Spc. Christopher Neiberger was killed in Iraq in 2007. Yet, she couldn’t believe that Trump somehow could not recognize her grief, which she explained was why she chose not to speak at the convention.

For some of Trump’s allies, the dispute is just the latest example of a troubling pattern: The real estate mogul hitting back at perceived slights or insults, regardless of the political implications.

“We all have same equal rights”, Khan said.
