South Korea’s Si Woo Kim ended the day with a birdie on the eighteenth to extend his lead to four shots over the field. The final pick comes two weeks later after the Tour Championship.

“Furyk kind of made 59 obsolete!” he told golfchannel.com, before outlining his plans for Saturday.

Kim eagled the par-5 fifth, hitting a 347-yard drive and a 170-yard approach to 10 feet.

That feat came within touching distance with an eighth birdie and an eagle but a wayward tee shot on his last hole meant that he had to settle for par and a score of 60. Kim played his opening nine in 6-under 29, and also birdied the par-4 second making another 10-footer.

The 21-year-old South Korean (below) jumped 40 places in the overnight standings after finding an eagle and eight birdies – including six on the back nine – on the Sedgefield Country Club course to reach 10-under, a feat which lifted him two strokes above Kevin Na, Hideki Matsuyama and Jim Furyk. Ryder had a chance to force a playoff, but missed an 8-foot birdie try on the par-5 18th.

“The greens are brilliant”, Cabrera Bello said.

“This week they are much better”, he said.

Rafa Cabrera Bello looked very good in the first round after he opened with a seven-under 63 to bring him into a tie for the lead.

“I had the read”, he said. “Get to play some unbelievable golf tournaments within those months, and I guess get even more experience for when I do turn pro”. “Keep attacking those flags and we’ll see”. “You know, you get somebody who hits it in the fairway a bunch and the greens are so good you never know”. He was chasing his sixth PGA TOUR title, first since the 2012 Transitions Championship. It also is the next-to-last chance to earn points for the Ryder Cup, which begins September 30. Love will make his first three captain’s picks September 11 after the BMW Championship.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (AP) – Curtis Luck was walking along the course, doing the math on how he’d turned a close U.S. Amateur final into a rout by winning eight holes in a row.
