Responding to this week’s claim by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that the reclusive state is ready to unleash a hydrogen bomb, a State Department spokesperson called on the already heavily sanctioned Pyongyang to “comply with its worldwide commitments and obligations”. The three nuclear tests are said to be critical for North Korea’s strategic arms programme.

The country declared it had nuclear weapons in 2003, and conducted nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.

A South Korean intelligence official said Kim’s claim was nothing more than “rhetoric” for domestic consumption.
Close ally China reacted to the new claim of Kim saying the situation is delicate and complex on the Korean peninsula.
