Kindle Charger Recall Over Electric Shock Fears

Should you choose to receive an exchange, you’ll be sent an equivalent Amazon-branded adapter, but it will bear a different model number and will not be affected by the issue that is forcing the recall.

Concerns were raised when it was found that in some “rare cases” the power adapters for these products can cause electric shocks when the USB lead is removed from the three pin plug. In the United Kingdom, household voltage is 220, double the 110-volt standard in USA homes.

When pulled from a socket, the assembly may separate enough to create the risk of electrical shock.

The affected devices cost between £49.99 and £99.90 and were sold after September 2015.

Customers are advised to visit a recall page where they can either have a replacement adapter sent out free of charge, or have the equivalent credit added to their Amazon account. We encourage customers to exchange their original power adapters.

The other option is to request a free replacement for one of the faulty power adapters. Amazon has contacted owners via email to warn them that these adapters may cause electric shocks.

Apple recalled power charger adapter plugs of its own in January, and Microsoft withdrew power cords for its Surface Pro tablets the following month.

Amazon is not the only company to have problems with power adapters this year.

Otherwise, Amazon recommends that you stop using the original adapters immediately and use another USB power adaptor or a computer to charge the device.
