More deals are possible Monday before the 3:00 trade deadline, with Riley Nash also leaving Sunday’s game for undisclosed reasons and John-Michael Liles also reportedly drawing interest, so stay tuned.
The same basic reasoning likely applied to Versteeg, who will be a free agent at the end of the year. The winger had 11 goals and 22 assists in 62 games with Carolina this season.
A second-round selection (37 overall) of the Kings in the 2013 NHL Draft, Zykov was the QMJHL’s Rookie of the Year in 2012-13 after tallying 75 points (40g, 35a) as a 17-year-old.
Versteeg, 29, was traded to the Hurricanes on September 11, 2015 alongside Joakim Nordstrom and a draft pick from the Chicago Blackhawks.
At the least, Los Angeles didn’t part with a lot of major assets to acquire the nine-year veteran.
Zykov, 20, is in his first professional season with the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League. There’s still plenty of time for him to become an National Hockey League regular, but a lack of marked improvement is a concern.
