Kinsler, Cabrera homer as Tigers beat White Sox 2-1

The Tigers led. Cabrera’s two-run single pushed him even further into the annals of baseball history, making him the fastest player to reach both the 400 home run and 1,500 RBI, and propelling the Detroit Tigers to a 7-5 win over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field tonight. Their starting pitcher, former Tigers first-round draft pick Jacob Turner, threw 101 pitches and didn’t survive the fourth inning. Kyle Ryan relieved Fulmer in the home half of the 6th and surrendered just a two-out walk. The White Sox struck in the bottom of the inning, partly thanks to a rare miss by Jose Iglesias at shortstop. Fulmer did end the rally with a double play, but only after going down 1-0.

Injury updates: Eaton left the game in the eighth inning after fouling a ball off his right foot in the third.

The Tigers’ three runs in the third inning matched the total scored they had scored in the previous 18.

Kinsler and Cabrera made it 2-1 with solo homers against James Shields (4-12) in the fifth.

Later, rookie right-hander Carson Fulmer, the fifth Sox pitcher of the night, filled the bases with Tigers in the seventh.

Ian Kinsler scored three runs, Nick Castellanos had two of Detroit’s 11 hits and the Tigers broke through after managing just six runs over the previous four games against Minnesota and Chicago.

The Tigers, though, left too much on the table – again. With the club 10 games back of divisional leader Cleveland and and 7 games out of the wild card heading into Thursday’s night games would Hahn depart from the organization’s historic model of win now mode? Cabrera has been one of the few constants in the lineup; he’s hitting.302 with an.813 OPS. “We weren’t overlooking them”, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus told MLB.com after losing the series finale to the Twins 4-1 on Wednesday.

Kyle Ryan (4-2) pitched a scoreless inning in relief after a rare shaky start by Michael Fulmer.

Chicago’s Jose Abreu had three hits and drove in two runs. “This is what can happen”, said Kinsler, who hit his second home run in two games. He walked Justin Upton, gave up a single to Tyler Collins and walked Jarrod Saltalamacchia to load the bases with nobody out, and after a pair of groundouts brought a run in, he walked Cameron Maybin to re-load the bases. According to MLB.com, Turner is the first MLB pitcher since Jaime Garcia in 2011, and 10th since 2000, to throw 100 or more pitches in 3 1/3 innings or less.
