Kirby Smart hires Pitt’s Jim Chaney as offensive coordinator

That will no longer be the case, as offensive coordinator Jim Chaney is leaving the Panthers to take the same position at Georgia under new Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart.

While Smart and Chaney were never on the same staff, they clashed often, as Smart was Alabama’s defensive coordinator from 2008 through 2015, while Chaney was an SEC offensive coordinator from 2009 through 2014. Chaney and Pittman have coached together at two previous stops – at Tennessee in 2012 and at Arkansas during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Chaney, a Missouri native, spent this past season in the same job at Pittsburgh. “Jim and Sam are highly respected nationally as individual coaches”, Sensible stated in a release.

Georgia held its annual team banquet Saturday night in Athens, with former head coach Mark Richt receiving a standing ovation.

Jim Chaney is returning to the SEC.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said Chaney’s work “was very important as we established our program in this first year”. “In addition to being an excellent football coach, he is a tremendous person and we wish him and his family the very best”.

At Purdue, Chaney coached Drew Brees, Billy Dicken and Kyle Orton, all of whom passed for over 3,000 yards multiple times.

Sam Pittman has been a prized assistant since arriving in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Pittman is considered one of college football’s top offensive line coaches and was Arkansas’ third highest-paid assistant coach at $525,000 annually. He has been in charge of a unit that has allowed the fewest sacks in the SEC for four straight seasons. Schumann was Alabama’s director of player personnel and defensive analyst.
