Kirdyapkin set to be stripped of London Olympic gold

Russian Federation will lose two World Championship gold medals and an Olympic gold after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld an appeal by the IAAF over selective doping punishments imposed by the country’s anti-doping agency.

The IAAF announced in March 2015 that they would appeal against the suspensions handed down by RUSADA as it felt the “selective disqualification of results” were incorrectly applicable with the anti-doping rules adopted by the global governing body.

The ruling, which disqualified all of Kirdyapkin’s competitive results from August 20 2009 to October 15 2012, means Australia’s London gold medal tally will rise to eight.

Russian race walker Sergey Kirdyapkin was stripped of all results he achieved at the athletic competitions between August 20, 2009 and October 15, 2012, including his 2012 Olympics gold.

It has also emerged that Olive Loughnane will be upgraded to world champion as a result of CAS decision.

Athletics Australia chief executive officer Phil Jones added: “Athletics Australia has always been of the opinion that Jared Tallent is the rightful gold medallist in the men’s 50km race walk at London 2012”.

The decision was taken on March 24 by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Upon the announcement, Tallent tweeted: “History has been rewritten…”

“I knew it myself inside, but a month after the Olympics, you’re just the person who finished fourth and you’re kind of forgotten about if you don’t have a medal”, the Togher athlete said.

“We will now take immediate action through the IAAF to ensure that the result is amended”.

Ireland, and Cork, has a new Olympic hero to celebrate this morning.. “I’m very excited to see the result amended and thank all those who have supported me across this journey”, Tallent said.

Artyom Patsev, a lawyer for the All-Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF), said in an interview with TASS earlier in the day commenting on the CAS ruling “that the decision can not be appealed.”.
